We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, exploring New Zealand by caravan, campervan or motorhome is one of the best ways to take in its beauty!

With plenty of land to cover and countless options for places to stay, we’ve rounded up our top five most scenic and beautiful campsites in New Zealand.

Matauri Bay Holiday Park, Bay of Islands
Located just off the North Island, and 30 minutes from Kerikeri is the stunning beach front Matauri Bay Holiday Park. With extensive ocean views and close proximity to activities including fishing, diving and walks, it is no surprise this is one of the most well-known caravan spots in the region. There are a range of different accommodation options including powered and non-powered caravan and motorhome sites, as well as a general store, huge communal kitchen, bathroom and laundry facilities and a petrol station.

Opoutere Coastal Camping, Coromandel

With stunning white sandy beaches and beautiful mountain ranges, the Opoutere Coastal Camping site is Coromandel’s worst kept secret. Even with its high tourist numbers, the campsite itself remains an unspoilt hideaway. There are a range of sizeable powered and non-powered sites available with bathroom and laundry facilities available at a fee. There are also BBQ points around the grounds.

Okiwi Bay Holiday Park and Lodge

Another beachfront camping site, the Okiwi Bay Holiday Park and Lodge is perfect for families. Located in a secluded cove, the campsite itself is quite small with 10 powered sites and three unpowered sites, but it is decked out with all the facilities you might need including bathroom, laundry and a full-size kitchen. There is so much on offer in the region including fishing, diving, bush walks and some amazing food and wine spots.

Mount Maunganui Beachside Holiday Park

Located on the North Island, Mount Maunganui Beachside Holiday park is one of the most popular holiday spots for summer tourists. The campsite itself is nestled right on the surf beach, with the just behind. With a shared kitchen, plenty of BBQ areas and decent bathroom facilities, the Mount Maunganui Beachside Holiday Park is a must visit on your next family vacation.

Totaranui Campground
If you are thinking of trekking the Abel-Tasman coastal track, or just want a beautiful beachside campsite, you can’t go past the Totaranui Campground. It is an enormous site that hold over 800 people, with a range of powered and non-powered sites suitable for caravans and campervans as well as bathroom and laundry facilities throughout. If you are in the area, make sure you check out one of the beautiful day walks. There are also some great fishing and kayaking spots.
